Stop the stress! Feel FREE again! NEWS FLASH! The word is finally reaching mainstream TV! Hi Friends, Did you know that you really don’t have pain in your body? It’s true! There are nerves in your body that send and receive pain signals, but all pain signals are felt and determined via the brain. When the brain is stressed and “in pain” because of the stress, it sends pain signals to your body. Your knee aches, or your back aches or your headache sends you to bed. The brain is telling you in its own way to knock off all the stress and give it a break! Of course, this is just backwards of what the medical profession believes. They believe that you have pain because you had some sort of damage to your body—surgery, or an accident, and now that spot in your body is doomed to forever experience pain. And they may even suggest that you’ll get Arthritis just to confirm it. Oh, yes, they suggest these things. And because they are the authority figure, we accept it as truth and our brain begins to implement their suggestion! You’ve heard of the power of suggestion? Well, it works. What our brain believes, it begins to manifest. In my own experience and in my work with pain over the past 6 years, I am here to tell you that it truly is the other way around. Yes, there may have been damage, and the brain focuses pain on that spot, but it is a reminder only. The reminder is “You have really hurt yourself and don’t do it again. And just so you remember, here’s this pain to keep you from doing it again.” Our subconscious records our history and protects us. It doesn’t reason or use logic. It doesn’t judge or decide. It records. And when we make a decision with our conscious mind to do or not do something, our subconscious scans our history and either permits this or doesn’t permit this decision to move forward based on what it has recorded. Smoking for Example: You decide to quit, but it is a struggle and finally you give up. Your subconscious has scanned your history and determined that you NEED that smoking habit as a stress reliever and besides, all your friends smoke, so you’d lose all your friends. If you need more excuses not to quit, your subconscious will supply those, as well. It always appeals to your conscious mind through logic and fact. But, if you can go directly to your subconscious, as is done with hypnosis, then you can change the subconscious to be congruent with your decision, and quitting smoking is no effort at all. The same is true of pain. Even though you FEEL the pain in your body, once you realize that the pain is actually coming from your brain, then you can do something wonderful about it. Your brain can be relieved of its stress. It can be “reprogrammed” so that it won’t continue sending you pain signals in that spot. Dealing with pain is one of the easiest and most simple tasks to accomplish with this wonderful technique. You can eliminate it the pain at that troublesome spot, quickly and easily. A year or so ago I BADLY burned my hand and I wrote about that on my web page Blog: “I was baking bread a few days ago. When the bread was done, I grabbed the pot holders to remove the heavy glass baking dish from the oven. Just as I reached for the handle, I dropped the hot pad holder from my left hand, so I grasped the pan’ handle (375 degree oven!) with my bare fingers. I didn't dare drop it as it would have shattered all over my bare feet, so I had to remove the heavy pan from the oven and set it down bare handed. I had literally FRIED the fingers on my left hand. They were stinging and burning. It really hurt!” “I immediately started using the technique. Just a couple of minutes later, the pain was gone. The skin on my fingers was an angry red, but they didn’t blister. “ “Later that day, driving out to my daughter's house, my fingers started to sting and burn again, so I used the technique again. Again the pain disappeared. The angry red color gradually faded and the next day the skin on my fingers was as pink and normal as the skin on my other hand. I had no burns, no blistering, no pain. I've had ‘way less severe burns in the past and those have raised blisters.” Simply by calming the subconscious, which was just doing its job by causing pain to remind me not to do that again, I was able to be pain free and not only that, but BLISTER free. I simply told it that pain and blistering wasn’t necessary. Your subconscious controls all that goes on in your body. From pain to disease to even crippling of different sorts…your subconscious can literally make your body behave in a different way, if it is programmed differently. It can strengthen or weaken your immune system, so that you acquire or avoid a disease. It can cause your muscles to lengthen or shorten to make you walked stooped over or upright. What we see as disease may only be a physical manifestation of the suffering going on inside our heads. And unfortunately many of us aren’t even aware that our brain is suffering. Doctors certainly aren’t. They focus only on the body and even separate – totally -- the mind (psychiatry) from the body (medicine). It’s time we recognized that we are ONE person, physical/mental/spiritual. ALL must be integrated and treated to be well and be whole. When you learn how, a whole new world opens up to you! Rest Easy, Ryder
![]() |
| Justin Ryder Kilgrow 9/7/74 - 3/28/11 Dearest friend, kindred spirit, this world is a dimmer place without you in it. |
This is more how I remember him, minus the moustache and the ink. He was just a kid when I met him on his 21st birthday in 1996. Anyone who knew him would say the same thing: there was just something about him.
I had just arrived at the Newport Beach, California treatment center the day before. I was embarking on my sober journey for the first time after 10 long, hard years on the streets of Hollywood. It was a totally new world to me. I had hit my bottom...and then hit it again...and again. And I was ready without reservations of any kind. Scared but ready.
It was my first co-ed AA meeting, my second AA meeting ever in my jaded 27 years. Everyone was standing out front chit chatting, and there he was, friendly and inviting with a welcoming smile and a devilish twinkle in his aquamarine eyes. We became instant friends. I felt I had found a kindred spirit in him. He was very patient and tolerant, extremely intelligent, very clever, funny, and uncanningly self-aware. And he was focused on his recovery, as was I.
He was an alcoholic then - although addiction is addiction, independent of the substance. He explained to me that he was a drinker of the hardcore type. I guess at that time, I didn't really understand what he meant by 'hardcore'. He was only just 21! He was from Salt Lake City, for Pete's sake! How 'hardcore' could he really be?!?!
At about 55 days into his sobriety, Ryder changed. He started hanging around with a different crowd, people who weren't so focused on their treatment and recovery. He still chatted with me, but we no longed shared long important conversations about self-discovery and solutions. He was friendly but distant. I had lost my best friend, my touchstone, my brother.
At 63 days, he relapsed. And then he was gone.
About 9 months later, as I exited the Alano club after a meeting, I saw him coming up the stairs as I went down them. I cannot explain how happy and relieved I was to see my dear dear friend back here, alive and okay. Unfortunately, it didn't last long. Within the week, he was hunting me down at the club, drunk as hell.
In those days, there was no question about sobriety for me. You were either sober, or you weren't. You were doing everything you could to maintain your sobriety, or you weren't. There was no middle ground. No trying. Trying got us nowhere. It wasn't until we took action that we actually effected changes in our lives. Basically, in my mind sobriety equalled life, while addiction meant death. No middle ground there either. So to see anyone loaded, especially my Ryder, was devastating. It was painful and I felt desperate and afraid. And now I knew what Ryder meant by 'hardcore'.
Ryder and I stayed the night at a friend's house one night. I sat with him while he drank himself out. I lay beside him on the floor as he slept, counting the minutes until the detox center in Stanton opened, and I could take him there. He had agreed to go, but when the time came, he may change his mind. This was one of the most awful nights of my litany of many awful nights. I watched my friend as he hovered between life and death.
He chose life!! The next morning came, and after waffling back and forth, back and forth, and after consuming enough alcohol to get him into the detox, I dropped him off. I visited his sober living house and made arrangements for him to return once he had detoxed. I had hope once again that my best friend would be okay, that he would be sober, and that he would live.
Shortly thereafter, I met a man and moved up here to Washington state. In that short time, I had the priviledge of spending time with Ryder, enjoying his scintillating wit, his amazing intelligence, his never-ending love for people, his hope, and the gift of his friendship.
It took me 13 1/2 years to find him again. We'd lost contact. My life was different, radically different since I left. But since the day I met him, Ryder was a fixture in my heart. He'd etched his own place in me, and there he would stay, never far from my thoughts. I met his uncle - he was a client where I worked (how weird is THAT?). I received vague updates from time to time. I learned he had had a son, that he wasn't doing very well. I searched online for more information, for a way to contact him, finding nothing more than arrest records. At least I knew he was alive.
Several months ago, I happened across him on Facebook. Oh glory!!!! Oh Thank God!!!! Here he was, my Ryder, my kindred spirit, my touchstone, and he was doing okay!
I never got to hear his voice. We emailed a couple of times, texted each other from time to time, always with the promise that "we will talk". I kind of knew we wouldn't. He was different. He told me briefly how his life had been, the heartbreak he'd suffered. He'd told me what he needed to, and he was done.
We never did get to talk. And now we never will.
Justin "Ryder" Kilgrow died on March 28th, 2011 of a heroin overdose on the floor of the bathroom in his sober living house. He leaves a legacy of unconditional love and many many friends behind. He was a man unlike any other. He was such a loving person, so kind and tolerant. But he was no match for the demons we faced, at one time together.
Sometimes I think that God chooses the most loved from amongst us addicts, the ones whose death will make the greatest impact on the largest number of people, and he takes them from us. Maybe by remembering Ryder (and Layne, and Jason, and Nicole, and...), we will be encouraged to continue making the right choices, we will continue to be sober. The loss of our most wonderful friends we will carry with us forever.
Ryder, my darling brother, my kin, I pray that you rest easy now. I pray that you are finally fulfilled and safe with your beloved mom and grandmas. I'm no longer sad for you, but my heart aches for your Elizabeth, your Tristen, your family, the others you've left behind.
God gave me the most wonderous gift - a tall, skinny young man with a warm welcoming grin and a devilish twinkle in his aquamarine eyes. You blessed me with your friendship, Ryder, and I miss you. I will forever be grateful to have had you in my life. My dear dear friend.

Address to a Haggis -- Robert Burns
In honour of Robert Burns's birthday, here's a guest poem from David McKelvie, about that most endearing of Scottish delicacies:
(Poem #1154) Address to a Haggis Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o' the pudding-race! Aboon them a' yet tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm: Weel are ye wordy o'a grace As lang's my arm. The groaning trencher there ye fill, Your hurdies like a distant hill, Your pin was help to mend a mill In time o'need, While thro' your pores the dews distil Like amber bead. His knife see rustic Labour dight, An' cut you up wi' ready sleight, Trenching your gushing entrails bright, Like ony ditch; And then, O what a glorious sight, Warm-reekin', rich! Then, horn for horn, they stretch an' strive: Deil tak the hindmost! on they drive, Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve Are bent like drums; Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive, Bethankit! hums. Is there that owre his French ragout Or olio that wad staw a sow, Or fricassee wad make her spew Wi' perfect sconner, Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view On sic a dinner? Poor devil! see him owre his trash, As feckles as wither'd rash, His spindle shank, a guid whip-lash; His nieve a nit; Thro' blody flood or field to dash, O how unfit! But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed, The trembling earth resounds his tread. Clap in his walie nieve a blade, He'll mak it whissle; An' legs an' arms, an' hands will sned, Like taps o' trissle. Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care, And dish them out their bill o' fare, Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware That jaups in luggies; But, if ye wish her gratefu' prayer Gie her a haggis! |
I like Robert Burns; I like him in two distinct ways. Firstly, because of who and what he is. One of the main foundations of the Romantic period that followed him; one of the few truly international poets (the Russians love him apparently); a humanist at a time when such attitudes were seen as bizarre (one critic of his day said of the socialist anthem "For a' that and a' that": "This song may be said to embody all the false philosophy of [his] time") and to top all of that off, a bit of a rogue. Casanova eat your heart out! Oh, and did I forget to mention that he is a superb poet with music running through his veins? The second reason is because my dear maternal great-grandmother claimed that we were descended from him. I haven't got round to checking my mother's side of family tree. It might not be true. It probably isn't. But while there's doubt, there's hope. So I don't think I'll be checking my family history just yet..... :) And another personal note: my very first anthology of poetry was given to me by my father. He won this as first prize in a Burn's Recitation competition when he was at school. So, my liking for Burns may be either genetic or purely down to my father's skills at recitation! This poem is traditionally recited at Burns Suppers held on the 25th January to celebrate his date of birth. How many other nations in the world (the Western world at least) have an annual celebration centrered the recitation of poetry? The poem itself is typical Burns: strong rhythms, even stronger dialect (yes, I have great difficulty with it and I'm Scottish) and typical earthy Burns humour directed at the those with their fancy ways and French ragouts. And to top it off, my copy of his Colected Poems claims that he pretty much improvised and recited this poem on the spot. Now that's just showing off.... And if you've come this far and want to know what a haggis is.... [broken link] http://www.smart.net/~tak/haggis.html www.robertburns.org has lots of information on the Bard and a glossary for all those tricky words. David [David also sent me a bit about the tradition of Burns Suppers - I've included it below - martin] The 25th January is the birthday of Robert Burns and here in Scotland (and all over the world amongst scottish folk) there will be Burns Suppers. Here's an extract from www.robertburns.org about them: "The annual celebratory tribute to the life, works and spirit of the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796). Celebrated on, or about, the Bard's birthday, January 25th, Burns Suppers range from stentoriously formal gatherings of esthetes and scholars to uproariously informal rave-ups of drunkards and louts. Most Burns Suppers fall in the middle of this range, and adhere, more or less, to some sort of time honoured form which includes the eating of a traditional Scottish meal, the drinking of Scotch whisky, and the recitation of works by, about, and in the spirit of the Bard. Every Burns Supper has its own special form and flavour, though there are probably more similarities than differences among these gastro-literary affairs. Individual tastes and talents will determine the character of your Burns Supper. Some celebrants may contribute the composition of original songs or poems; some may excel at giving toasts or reciting verse; while others may be captivating storytellers. A particular group of celebrants will, over time, develop a unique group character which will distinguish their Burns Supper celebration from every other."
